Another popular trend that is common in Japan was “Oni-can”. In English, Oni-can means Daemon Camber. Oni-can involves setting the suspension of the car with obscene amounts of negative camber. This enables the driver to slide the car easily and loose the grip of the car. But the Oni-can setup compromises the grip, overall control and stability of the car. The oni-can setup is least recommended as these drawbacks make the setting extremely dangerous.

Generally, the suspension of a car that is used for drifting is very tight and unforgiving. Even the chassis of the car used to be tightened with roll cages and strut braces. Even the diehard drifting enthusiasts use to alter the suspension geometry of the cars used for drifting in order to enable better sliding of the car. This is how usually the drivers configure car for drift. Similar to every other field, modification of the car, including the suspension and the body of the car, is a trade-off. For a novice, it is better to make the front suspension hard and the rear suspension soft. But generally, this suspension is considered to be a handicap in higher levels.

RWD Power slide can be considered to all RWD cars. RWD Power Slide eliminates the risk of fatal understeer on less than ideal roads which results in higher cornering speeds. The basic theory of the operation if RWD Power Slide is that the lateral grip of the rear spinning wheels decrease.

Instructions:

Flick the car into the turn if the driver feels the engine power is sufficient enough to break the traction.

Straight away throttle enough to break the traction and at the same time counter steer the car. (Novice drivers please note that if you fail to counter steer simultaneously while throttling, you might end up spinning out)

More throttling more will result in more lateral tail slide and less forward propulsion.

Throttling less will result in less lateral tail slide but more forward propulsion.

The driver needs to find the proper balance. Ideal RWD Power is as little tail slide as possible which is just enough to stop it from regaining grip and to prevent understeer.

Gently back off the throttle and opposite lock the steering (relative to the turn) in order to stop sliding.

Late Apex and 90-Degree Corner Drifts:

There are two different ways of approaching a corner.

Drift Angle For Late Apex - Stay late outside the turn, then start to turn into the apex point:

90 Degree Turn

Medium Speed and S-Corner Drifts:

Drift angles change based on the nature of the corners.

Medium Speed Drift Angle – The driver needs to keep a good speed when entering a medium type corner. The driver will loose the apex point if the car enters the medium type corner too fast.

Medium speed drift angle

S-Corner Drift Angle – Set up is the key for this style of turn. Begin the drift but always remember the exit of the second part of the corner is most critical and also to set up for the correct Apex.

Swaying Drift (Choku-Dori) Instructions:

To perform a Swaying Drift the driver should take the car at a medium to high speed when entering a turn.

The driver should turn the wheels of the car away form the turn in Swaying Drift.

Holding in the release button of the hand brake (Parking brake) of the car, the driver should pull up the brake sharply and then quickly release (Parking brake should be held for about a second only). If the car used for Swaying Drift is a RWD car, apply the clutch while pulling the hand brake.

Whenever the driver feels the rear end of the car kicking out, immediately counter steer the steering to face straight with the road. As long as the wheels keep moving, the car will pull in the direction of the front wheels and hence the driver can keep on the throttle.

The car will now slide sideways in an angle away from the turn the driver wish to make.

If the driver wants to turn the car back into the direction of the turn the driver wish to make, let off the throttle rapidly and completely. The car will snap back in the opposite direction by letting off the throttle quickly. Get on the throttle again to maintain and continue the drift once the car is at the driver’s desired angle.

To lineup the car’s wheels with the road again, let the steering wheel to go off. If necessary, counter steer the car.

If the driver feels the vehicle is losing speed while sliding sideways, heel-toe downshift into a low gear which the driver feel that will be enough to pull the car through the drift.

After completing the drift, when the driver wish to straighten out the car, let off the throttle smoothly and straighten out the wheels so that the car will kick in line behind the front tires.

To perform Kansei Drift, the driver should take his car to a turn at high speed, as the Kansei Drift is supposed to be performed at race speeds. The speed should be so high such that if the car fails to drift, the car should experience severe understeer.

The driver should turn the wheels of his car sharply into a turn, and then let off the throttle swiftly. The car will oversteer due to the cornering force of the vehicle added to the loss of throttle.

Get on the throttle again quickly as the driver feels the car is beginning to loose traction. This helps the car to overpower the wheels for the traction that is available, thus sending the car into a drift.

When the driver feels the rear end of the car kicking out, immediately countersteer so that the wheels will face straight with the road. The car will pull in the direction of the front wheels, as long as the wheels keep moving. Keep throttling. If the driver tends to brake or let off the throttle since the car is extremely oversteered, the car will spin out and may exit out of the road.

After completing the drift, when the driver wish to straighten out the car, let off the throttle smoothly and straighten out the wheels so that the car will kick in line behind the front tires.

How to perform a Jump Drift ?

To perform a Jump Drift, the driver should take his car to enter a turn at a medium speed.

To do a Jump Drift, the driver should turn the wheels into the turn and keep on throttling, but the driver should drive the inside wheels of the car over a low curb.

When the rear wheel bounces over the curb, stay on the throttle. When the wheels are back on the road, the wheels should be spinning faster than the available traction that can be handled and thus the wheels will break the traction. Now the driver should keep the car on the throttle as the vehicle start drifting.

Whenever the driver feels the rear end of the car kicking out, immediately counter steer the steering to face straight with the road. As long as the wheels keep moving, the car will pull in the direction of the front wheels and hence the driver can keep on the throttle.

How to perform Changing Side swing ?

Changing Side Swing technique is very much similar to Inertia/Feint drift and is extensively used in the Japanese D1 competition. Changing Side drift technique is often done one the first entry drift corner, that is often a long double apex turn just before a very fast straight way. In case the straight way before the double apex is a downhill orientation, the driver has to keep driving on the closest side of the track to the corner. Right after this step, the driver should abruptly change the car onto the other side, bearing a correct timing in mind. This movement helps the car momentum to be altered and loose traction of the rear wheels. Thus the car will be in a drift at this moment. Now the drift is carried over into the corner as well as through the corner.
