Improving the air induction

The air filter is a key part of the engine of a car and its function is to get clean, filtered and efficient air that is not too oily, dirt or greasy and air that is not too thick.

Usually the best air filter for better flow rates are made of a special kind of sponge material impregnated with dirt retentive spray to aid filtration or comprise a fine grade metallic mesh. The air flow will be better with bigger surface area of the air filter. Today, air induction kit that completely replaces the air intake box can be installed in the mainstream cars. The benefit of the air induction kit is to get a better air flow, in particular at high revs. Another benefit of the air induction kits is the induction roar when the air is sucked into the engine. The downside of the air induction kit is the same induction roar, as some people dislike the extra noise created by these air induction kits. It is noticed that small engined cars can actually lose power when fitted with the air induction kit. To deliver cold air into the engine is challenging as the temperature under the bonnet usually can get quite high. Note that cold sir is proven to carry more oxygen and the oxygen aids in better combustion. Even a 20 degrees increase in the temperature can rob up to 3% power of the car! In a simple solution, an intercooler which is sprayed with CO2 can be added and it will reduce the temperature of the air intake. The car will feel to be less powerful, with an induction kit in some small engine non-turbo applications. The best option to overcome such a situation is to replace the panel air filter that goes inside the standard air box.

Thus the best air induction kits come with a cold air feed pipe and usually are fitted in an air box that sheilds the intake air from high temperatures under the bonnet. This is the best compromise between the standard air intake box and the induction kit. Some air induction kits come with a long pipe as the air filter sits at the end nearest of the bonnet which helps to cut down the noise and also helps to reduce the intake air temperature. Kits that claim to get more air forced in, due to the position that they protrude under the front bumper, using the pressure built up on the front of the car as it cuts through air, does not gain power significantly other than the benefit of getting the cold air from outside the engine bay. In order to realize the benefit of the ram, the car should take speeds upto over 100mph. The main demerit of such kits are they collect lot of botanical specimen’s of flys, bugs and moths in the air filter!

NB: Extra caution should be given while placing the cold air feed, as it may suck water into the engine every time the car splashes through a puddle. More power can be obained by avoiding the under bonnet air, if the air filter is enclosed in a box with a cold air feed. Carbon fibre boxes are most recommended as they are well known for their heat sheilding and durability. Wrapping the exhaust manifold with heat resistant material can also help to bring down the under bonnet temperatures. Adding tasteful vents to the bonnet also help to take away the heat.
